SCF Update from ALA 2018 Midwinter Meeting

Attending

Jane Carpenter, Ellen Cordes, Emily Epstein, Kate Moriarty.

Report to Bib Standards

Kate and Ellen gave the Standard Citation Forms Report for BSC Midwinter 2018 at the Feb. 10 Bibliographic Standards Committee (BSC) meeting. The outcomes are outlined below.

Question 1: Group Structure

  • We reminded members that SCF is a subcommittee of BSC.

  • Most people agreed that subcommittees can be good entry points for volunteers not yet formal members of committees. Some mentioned the difficulty in getting funding and work release when not formally appointed but the general consensus was to keep the subcommittee open.

  • ACRL has group regulations. It’s possible that we can only have a formal group structure if SCF is a stand-alone committee rather than a BSC subcommittee.

  • The issue is of interest to the BSC chair, Francis Lapka, as there may be a need for a RBMS Policy Statements subcommittee and possibly a Rare Materials Ontology subcommittee. A few people cautioned against going the route of creating a separate committee, possibly because of the regulations and bureaucracy involved.

  • Francis expressed an inclination toward the subcommittee idea, with an editor and vice-editor, and membership open to anyone.

  • Kate asked for clarification from Francis at the end of the meeting as to whether SCF can stay a subcommittee and have some sort of unofficial group structure, such as term lengths and limits. He wasn’t sure but will follow up with us to discuss it further.

Question 2: Site Issues

  • Several people stated that they found the multiple search boxes very useful and expressed a strong interest in having them reinstated, though a couple members were worried about diverting the Web Team.

Question 3: Citations for Uncataloged Online Resources

  • After some discussion BSC said that we can create citations for uncataloged online resources without first cataloging the resource.

SCF Gathering

  • Ellen, Emily, Jane, and Kate gathered for dinner Saturday, Feb. 10.

Recruitment

  • We announced at the Feb. 10 BSC and Feb. 11 Technical Services Discussion Group meetings that we are seeking new volunteers.

  • Kate and Ellen gave a demo of the wiki and WordPress Dashboard following the BSC meeting to Francis (who was interested in the process from a chairperson standpoint) and one other BSC member.

  • Three people expressed an interest in joining. One will need to assess her capacity. The other two, who are joining, are: Martha Lawler and Jessie Sherwood.

RISM Citation

  • Kate introduced herself to Kathy Glennan at an ALA event and expressed again an interest in being put in touch with Music Library Association (MLA) members who are interested in changing our current RISM citation. Kathy is the one who brought the issue to our attention after a 2017 discussion on the MLA list. She said that she would follow up after ALA.

  • Jane has still not heard back on the email she sent earlier this month to the RISM Frankfurt office regarding their concerns with the current citation form.
