Agenda

  • Updating language and examples in MARC 21 510 field
  • Will citations be updated if catalog record gets updated?
  • Entry 814
  • 4 new entries - Jane
  • SCF as Linked Data

ACTIONS:

  • Jane will complete new proposals
  • Marcia will contact Web Team @ whether we access to edit style sheet
  • Allyson will work on this on adding microdata to style sheet
  • Allison will write up instructions including examples to add to the Working Principles

Updating Language/Examples in MARC21 510 Field

"I had reason to look at the MARC21 documentation for the 510 field today and it made me curious to know if the SCF group (or the BSC) will be putting forth (or has already put forth) a proposal to get it updated: https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd510.html This sentence is definitely in need of updating:

"Established forms of citations for bibliographies and catalogs used in cataloging rare materials are found in Standard Citation Forms for Published Bibliographies and Catalogs Used in Rare Book      Cataloging." Also, many of the examples are no longer in compliance. Just as an FYI, I did get the SCF title changed in the last revision of the PCC BSR/CSR and in the LC-PCC PS for 25.1."

Proposal put forward to change RDA language and add citation/relationships - wait until JSC approves this proposal. Consider using language from this proposal.

Updating Citations if Catalog Record Gets Updated

"I have to admit I don't really like the new SCF approach of tying citation forms so closely to the bib record (it doesn't seem very *standard* to me, given that different bib records were created according to different standards), but I'm sure there were pragmatic reasons for choosing to go this route. What I'm wondering is: If the OCLC master record for a bib record gets revised (e.g. upgraded from pre-RDA to RDA), does that mean the citation form should also be revised if applicable? Probably this would mostly come into play for edition qualifiers."

We won't be updating citation forms if the catalog record changes. A possible solution is to add URIs in the 510 to link to the OCLC record.

Entry 814

"This is a very in-depth bibliography. West (on the faculty here) has given his Styron books to the University and we are now cataloging them. He has a very elaborate numbering scheme for entries for impressions/printings. We would like to use edition level copy and include 510 references and notes on the relevant printings and impressions. Would those be separate 510's or would we use a range of pages?"

This is really a matter of cataloger's judgment. We suggest using one 510 note with a range of numbers/pages in subfield c.

Discussion: SCF as Linked Data

1) Add microdata to the existing HTML pages (simple)

        Rationale: Search Engine Optimization

Allison's email from March 6.  Add metadata to HTML tags in SCF site. Should be able to do this with the style sheet. We don't have access to the style sheet.

     ACTIONS:

  • Marcia will contact Web Team
  • Allyson will work on this.

2) Choose URIs for each entry, and either/or:

    * Use the info URI scheme for the OCLC number (simple)

Rationale: achieves identification purposes in catalog records/resources

    * Mint our own (harder)

Rationale: serve the SCF up as data

We're recommending people add a link to the OCLC record in the 510 field.

     ACTIONS:

  • Allison will write up instructions including examples to add to the Working Principles

3) Convert the SCF to RDF triples

Rationale: data maintenance, integration/merger, inferences, serendipitous linking to Web resources

ESTC is converting their data to triples. This is a project to watch.

4) Use the SCF site as a kind of union catalog -- we can get holdings data from the WorldCat API (relatively simple)

Rationale: help folks discover library resources

This is beyond our scope.  Point - skip the click-through to WorldCat using WorldCat API

5) Use the SCF entries as a portal to works cited -- that is, link the SCF entries to stuff cited in those works, by:

    * At first, querying 510 data (simple, but lots of work)

    * Eventually, taking advantage of the citation relationship (less work)

Rationale: help folks discover library resources

     This is beyond our scope.
